I work from maps, often historical ones, which I consider living materials charged with memory. I transform them, erase them in places, alter them, until their landmarks dissolve.
A map is not a neutral object: it is through maps that a territory is divided, named and possessed. The Western view, which seeks to own the land, stands against the cosmovision of Indigenous peoples, who feel themselves part of it, with no separation.
It is through colour that I seek to transmute the charge of territory into sensory experience, in a process of chromatic research and reflection on our relationship to the land.
Chilean by origin, from a colonised country, I restored pre-Columbian ceramics during my art studies, then worked for several years at the National Centre for Conservation and Restoration in Santiago, before settling in France. My practice is shaped by this memory, by displacement, and by multiple inheritances.
Above all, my images seek to bring joy. The paintings take several months: each parcel is coloured by hand, with a craftsman's precision. The illustrations, more accessible, keep the map legible while carrying the same chromatic research.
For me, colours are living beings, highly evolved individuals that become part of us, as they do of everything. True inhabitants of space. The line merely travels through them, merely passes by.
